NDLEA keeps mum on alleged killing by its operatives on Lagos Island

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has kept mum over alleged extra-judicial killing of some yet-to-be-identified persons during a drug raid on Lagos Island.

A report claims at least five persons were shot dead by the operatives.

Videos of violence and dead persons had surfaced on social media in the wake of the drug raid. TheCornet saw a video of a man with a gunshot injury being ferried on a wheelbarrow.

The victim, according to Twitter users, was a northerner working as a porter. Another corpse could be seen on the floor in yet another video.

Femi Babafemi, the anti-narcotics agency’s spokesperson  avoided commenting on the deaths while claiming that some persons tried to prevent operatives from taking away the suspects and the confiscated drugs.

“Truth is our operatives went for the arrest of a major drug kingpin and we got her and 5 others with almost 6,000kg of drugs despite attacks on our men,” the agency said.

The agency, in a redacted document it published across its social media handles, clarifies that its operatives need not present a warrant before carrying out an arrest.  The NDLEA quoted Section 41 (b) of the NDLEA while deliberately redacting subsection (a) of the same section. The redacted section shows that the responsibility to carry out a search and arrest on a person, premises, aircraft or suchlike places is by ‘a police officer, customs officer, or an officer of agency’.
