My economic reforms working – Tinubu tells IMF boss Georgieva

President Bola Tinubu says he informed the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, that the economic reforms embarked by his administration are working.
President Tinubu tweeted on Thursday about his meeting with Georgieva. He said he told the IMF’s boss “that our economic reforms are already yielding positive results and our administration remains committed to reducing the hardship.”
The President also claimed he told Georgieva that his administration is equally “protecting the most vulnerable in Nigeria.”
“Social safety nets, education, investments in infrastructure, and inclusive growth are key to our agenda. We are also engaging stakeholders and sensitising Nigerians to expand our economy’s tax base for inclusive developmental growth.
“We are doing this without necessarily increasing the tax burden on Nigerians, who have already given a lot,” Tinubu tweeted.
In the same vein, the IMF chief Georgieva described her meeting with President Tinubu as “excellent” one. She said, “ Excellent meeting with President @officialABAT at the #G20 Summit. Commended Nigeria’s decisive actions to reform the economy, accelerate growth and generate jobs for its vibrant population. The IMF strongly supports Nigeria on this journey.”
Cornet News reports that the IMF had categorized Nigeria among African countries facing ‘‘adjustment fatigue’.
This the Fund meant to be countries whose reforms have not translated to significant progress. IMF said the affected economies including Nigeria needed to rethink reform strategies by building and maintaining pro-growth coalitions among constituent leaders and the general public. “This will require greater attention to communication and engagement strategies, reform design, compensatory measures, and rebuilding trust in public institutions,’’ the IMF report said.
