Kidnap victim shot dead during rescue in Kogi

A kidnap victim has been shot dead while she was being rescued from her captors.

The assailants had abducted the deceased and five others on Friday in Ojuwo-Ocha of Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State.

Police operatives and members of the vigilante are said to have raced after the kidnappers, pursuing them into a bush and engaging them in a gun duel.

A report said one of the kidnappers died in the exchange of fire, while the others escaped.

One the rescued victims allegedly said the kidnappers shot dead one person, after she complained of being sick and unable to walk.

However, the foregoing contradicts the police account of the incident.

William Aya, the spokesperson for the Kogi Police Command, said that the operatives neutralized one of the kidnappers, arrested two others and rescued the victims.

“On sighting the operatives, the hoodlums engaged the operatives in a gun duel. During the process, one of the suspects was neutralized, two others arrested and the victims rescued unhurt,” Aya said in a statement.
