Like Nigeria, British govt. says country ‘broke, blames predecessor

By Adeola Atanda

Britain’s newly formed Labour Party might have taken a cue from the incumbent Nigerian Government as it blames its predecessor for running the country aground.

Cornet Newsreports that the Bola Tinubu-led administration, since taking over the reins of power, has reenacted his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari’s blame game scenario. President Tinubu and several public officials have pinned Nigeria’s current economic challenges on Buhari-led government, the same way Buhari similarly accused his precursor, Goodluck Jonathan at the time.

The Keir Starmer-led government said Britain is “broke and broken” and blames the Conservative Party’s unbroken 14 years hold on power for the current sorry situation the country faces.

“We will not shy away from being honest with the public about the reality of what we have inherited.

“We are calling time on the false promises that British people have had to put up with and we will do what it takes to fix Britain,” ,’’ Pat McFadden, a senior member of the new Cabinet, said in a statement.

Prior to its sweeping victory at the poll, the Labour Party had promised the British public it would not raise tax. But, pushing back on the allegation against it, the Conservative Party says the Labour Party plans to raise tax and its complaint is a justification to do so.

“The reason we’re getting all this spin about this terrible economic inheritance is because Labour wants to raise taxes,” Hunt said on July 21.

“If they wanted to raise taxes, all the numbers were crystal clear before the election. … They should have levelled with the British public,” Jeremy Hunt, the immediate past Chancellor of the Exchequer, said.
