Court ‘jails’ IGP Alkali for contempt

Nigeria’s inspector-general of police Usman Baba Alkali is to serve three months in jail for contempt of court.

This is according to the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered on Tuesday.

The judge, M.O Olajuwon, made the pronouncement in the suit filed by embattled police officer Patrick Okoli.

The court had ruled that Okoli’s compulsory retirement was illegal, null and void.

It also gave a directive in 2011 that the affected police officer should be reinstated but the police authorities have failed to comply with the court judgment.

As the judge said, even the Police Service Commission, which handles issues of promotion and discipline of officers, is disposed to Okoli’s reinstatement.Â

Justice Olajuwon said he would extend the jail term, if at the end of the three-month sentence he finds that Okoli had still not been reinstated.

In addition to his reabsorption, the police are to pay Okoli N10 million (Ten Million Naira) as the cost for  special and general damages, since his dismissal in 1993.
