Policemen checking laptops, phones will face “severe consequences” – CP

Tuesday Assayomo, the commissioner of police in Kwara State, has said officers who whimsically flout the order against checking citizens’ laptops and phones will face “severe consequences.”

The warning comes amid increasing complaints about police officers invading people’s privacies during stop and search.

Assayamo also said he had set up a monitoring team who will look out for deviant officers.

The CP also frowns upon police officers indiscriminately stopping young men and women for a search. He advised members of the public, when faced with such situation, to insist on being taking to the nearest police station.

“The CP further advises landlords and tenants to demand search warrants authenticating the search of such dwelling places before they allow any officer in,” said a statement issued by the command.

Moreover, the command last week redeployed 26 officers culpable in extorting and harassing members of the public.
