Lagos auto-dealer Ogbonna remanded over wife’s death

A Lagos Magistrates’ Court has given an order for remand of Ikechukwu Daryl Ogbonna, aka IVD, over the death of his wife, Abimbola Martins-Ogbonna.

Magistrate Adebayo Kafayat Tella’s order followed the advice given by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Lagos State.

The DPP indicted Ogbonna of  involuntary manslaughter.

The defendant’s remand is to ensure his arraignment for the offence, the court said.

The defence counsel, Abubakar Yesufu, however, prayed the court to release the defendant based on his existing bail.

The magistrate over-ruled Yesufu, citing lack of jurisdiction to entertain a case of involuntary manslaughter. She advised the counsel to process bail application before the high court.

She then adjourned the case till March 7, 2023.

TheCornet reports that that 37-year-old Ogbonna and his wife endured a troubled marriage fraught with incidences of battery.

Abímbola died in an inferno that gutted their Lekki home. The deceased’s family is accusing Ogbonna of his wife’s murder.
