Kwara hijab crisis: Christians will not back down – Oke

Wale Oke, the president of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has said Christians would continue to oppose the wearing of hijab (Muslim scarf for women) in missionary schools in Kwara State.

The lingering disagreement over Muslim schoolgirls wearing the headscarf in Christian mission schools sparked a confrontation recently at the Baptist Secondary School, in Ilorin.

But, government defends the policy, saying it is voluntary and the students fundamental right too.

In his comment, Oke urged the Kwara Governor Abdul-Raman Abdul-Rasaq “to let the sleeping dog lie”.

“Respect the tradition and feelings of others. Avoid divisive politics that can set this nation on fire.

“Bring everybody together; don’t force hijab on our people, they won’t back down.

“Your Excellency, stoop to conquer; stoop for peace, stoop for harmony,” said Oke who was recently appointed president of the Christian body.

Oke reportedly made the statement during a visit by two leaders of the Ekiti and Ondo states chapters of the body.

Also, Oke faulted the tenure extension granted the Inspector-General of Police Muhammed Adamu.

Instead, Oke said Adamu ought to resign over his poor performance.
