Killing of Kaduna youth by soldier unlawful, cruel – court

The Economic Community of West African States Court sitting in Abuja has delivered ruling on the extra-judicial killing of a man by a Nigerian soldier.

The court heard how an unnamed soldier shot 35-year-old Solomon Andy, while he was packing sand from a gutter in Kaduna State.

The court holds the view that the killing was “unlawful” and “cruel”.

Justice Keikura Bangura, who read the ECOWAS Court’s judgement, upheld the arguments of Gloria Ballason, counsel for the mother of the deceased, Mrs Helen Joshua.

The court declared the killing and confiscation of Andy’s corpse by the Nigerian Army as unlawful, cruel, and degrading.

The court, in its ruling, awarded N30million as compensation to the deceased’s family.
