Kidnappers ask for ‘N620m ransom’ to release train kidnap victims

Criminals, who abducted some intending train passengers and officials at a train station in Edo State on Saturday, have allegedly asked for N620m ransom before their release.

Benson Odia, the executive director of the Esan Youth for Good Governance and Social Justice, reportedly said that the kidnappers are demanding N20m from each of the 31 victims’ families.

“I can tell you that the kidnappers have demanded N20m, totalling N620m. This is absurd and I don’t know where poor people will be able to raise that amount of money,’’ Odia was quoted as saying in a report.

But the Edo state police command’s spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor failed to confirm Odia’s claim.

TheCornet had reported how some unknown gunmen stormed the Tom Ikimi train station, abducting their victims.

A similar abduction of train passengers on the Kaduna-Abuja route last March had kept the country on the edge. Following the incident, the federal government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation promised beefing security to protect train passengers and forestall a recurrence. The promises pane into insignificance witht the latest attack.
