Kidnapped lecturers, students regain freedom finally
By Babajide Adekunle
Some students and staffers of the Federal University Gusau, in Zamfara State, have regained their freedom after spending seven months in the captivity of kidnappers. Among the staffers are lecturers of the university. A counter-insurgency website, Zagazola Makama, reported the release of the victims.
“Abducted students of Federal University Gusau and staff regain freedom,” the website wrote.
“It was gathered that the students and staff were kidnapped during an attack by bandits in the Gusau area in February of this year.
“After spending an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all the abducted individuals have returned in good health.”
Cornet News reports that, on September 2023, some armed assailants had invaded an off-campus hostel within the university community, kidnapping several female undergraduates, including the victims.
Nigerian has been battling insurgency and terrorism without success. Kidnapping for ransom has become a thriving industry in the country. In spite of the continued wanton attacks and killings of citizens, the Federal Government and its security agencies grimly claim to be winning the anti-terrorism war.
