NiMet forewarns about heavy flooding in northeast, southwest states

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has said they would be heavy rainfall and flooding in states of the northeast, especially Taraba state, and some parts of the South West region of the country.

Prof Mansur Matazu, the director-general of NiMet, said despite being forewarned, some states and local governments failed to heed or align themselves with the federal government’s plans to mitigate the effects of floods.

Matazu said NiMet has recorded 95 percent precision and accuracy in the last 15 years, even though the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) had set 60 percent precision.

Matazu said he believed the collaboration among the agency, the National Orientation Agency, and the Ministry of Information would raise public awareness.
