Jonathan, other leaders meet at ECOWAS summit over Malian crisis

Goodluck Jonathan, former Nigerian leader, has arrived Accra for the 4th Extraordinary ECOWAS summit on finding a political situation to the Malian crisis.

President Jonathan is Nigerian envoy on the Malian crisis. Writing on Facebook, Jonathan thanked “leaders of the sub-region for their continued engagement and efforts toward restoring democracy in Mali.”

Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the summit.

Mali was thrown into turmoil, last August, after a military junta ousted former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The mid-ranking officers had begun with a mutiny in the garrison town, before arresting Keita.

The junta, calling themselves “the Comité National pour le Salut, or CNSP, pledged to “organize general elections to allow Mali to equip itself with strong institutions within a reasonable time limit,” and to oversee a “political transition leading to credible elections for the exercise of democracy through a roadmap that will lay the foundations for a new Mali.”
