INEC assures of free, fair elections

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has assured Nigerians of free and fair elections on February 25 and March 1.

He made the pledge when the International Federation of Electoral System’s delegation paid him a visit on Monday.

Mahmood told his guests that the INEC is currently test-running the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) machines to be able to correct any possible anomaly before the polls. He invited Civil Society Organisations and the media to the demonstration taking place next Saturday.

Equally, Mahmood said the INEC decided to extend the deadlines for the collection of permanent voter’s card (PVC) to allow more registered voters obtain theirs.

He appealed to “Nigerians to see the extension as an opportunity to collect their PVCs.”

IFES President Anthony Banbury hailed the INEC for its efforts.
