IGP escapes jail following court ruling

Nigeria’s police boss, Usman Alkali Baba, has escaped jail following a latest court ruling that overturned his initial conviction.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, which initially sentenced Baba to three months jail for contempt, decided to set aside its own ruling after it was presented evidence that the police boss had complied with its order.

The judge, Bolaji Olajuwon, had ordered the reinstatement of Patrick Okoli, who was compulsorily retired from the police officer in the Okoli was compulsory retired in 1992.

In his ruling, Justice Olajuwon said, “In view of the substantial compliance with the order of the court and the assurance of ensuring full compliance, the order committing the applicant, Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, is hereby set aside,” she ruled.
