IBB off to Germany for medical check-up

Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria’s former military president, left the country on Monday for a medical check-up in Germany.

Alhaji Mahmud Abdullahi, media aide and confidant of the retired general disclosed in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

He said, “I did not discuss with Oga before he left Nigeria and where he had travelled to and why.

“I know he is due for a medical checkup because recently he has not gone for it.

“Therefore, I believe that he travelled to Germany on Saturday for the medical check-up.”

The media aide assured the public that there was no cause for alarm as the former leader had only travelled for a routine medical check-up.

Babangida led Nigeria between 1985 and 1992. He led a transition that restricted participating political parties to two: the defunct Social Democratic Party and the National Republican Party.

Businessman Moshood Abiola, the SDP presidential candidate, was believed to have defeated his NRC challenger Bashir Tofa in the election. However, the election was abruptly nullified while results were being announced. Babangida is reputed to have led a corrupt regime. He once described himself as ‘the evil genius.’
