I watched my five daughters drown in flood water – mother

A distraught mother has revealed how her five female children drowned in a flood water on September 26 in the Tabawa community of Yobe State.

“I lost Delu, Zahra, Amina, Hajara, and Hadiza in the accident,” Aisha said amidst her agony.

The oldest of the deceased children was nine years old and the youngest, three.

The children and their two older cousins had entered an amalanke, a bullock cart, to ferry them through the water.

Aisha said she wanted to see the kids cross to safety first, before she and her seriously infirmed husband would follow suit.

But that did not happen. Instead, the kids perished in the water while their older cousins survived.

I’m grief, Aisha recollected: “Somehow, I was told that the air pushed the cow and the cart capsized.”

Salamat Nuhu, Aisha’s mother, said the intense flood had forced them to abandon their home for safety.

“Since the rise of the sea level, water had been filling up our house and then on Sept. 26, we decided to leave.,” Salamat said.

Over 600 people have died in this year’s floods across affected places in Nigeria. Equally, the floods have destroyed several properties, washed away farmlands, and sacked millions from their homes.
