I have instructed 18 senior advocates to fight my battle – Umahi

Dave Umahi, governor of Ebonyi State, says he has hired 18 senior advocates to fight off his removal from office as proclaimed by a federal court on Tuesday.

The governor stated this at a solidarity rally by his supporters.

He said, “There is no need to entertain any fear.”

“We have confidence in the judiciary and I know they will do the right thing and we have engaged eight SANs to proceed to Abuja, we have engaged 10 SANs to produce to Enugu,” Umahi stated, while also wading off an accusation of disrespect to Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Nigerian Bar Association President Olumide Akpata had chided Umahi for derogating Justice Ekwo over the judgement he gave. Akpata said many who were outraged by Umahi’s comment had called for “appropriate action be taken to protect the sanctity of the judiciary.”

The governor, defending himself, said:

“Let me assure the NBA Chairman that he is a perfect gentleman and that we will never insult the judiciary.”

Umahi has appealed the judgement, citing 11 grounds on which the appellate court should set it aside.

The governor hinges his appeal on his belief that the judge erred in law by ordering his removal without following the constitutional provisions under which such could be done.
