I do not know LP’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, never met him – Emefiele

The governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has denied giving a large sum of new currency notes to the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for Lagos state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. A national daily had claimed in its report that Emefiele approved the release of N500m to Rhodes-Vivour, in order to give him an advantage over other candidates in the forthcoming March 18 governorship poll. The newspaper, quoting its sources, alleged that Emefiele and a certain retired general are also conspiring to undermine the president-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But, in its rebuttal, the CBN said that the story was fake news. The CBN statement, signed by Isa AbdulMumin, said the Bank was alerting “members of the public that this story is completely false and malicious as the CBN governor does not know and has never met Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour either in person or through a proxy.”

He added, “We wish to state that the CBN governor does not take part in politics and therefore urge anyone with contrary information to prove the governor wrong by providing any facts.”

Emefiele attracted public opprobrium due to his partisanship and the latest naira redesign policy. The CBN governor had nursed a presidential ambition, which did not fly. In the tick of the opposition to his partisanship, Emefiele asked the court in two separate suits to determine his eligibility as a sitting CBN governor for the contest. He subsequently backed out of the battle for the ruling party’s ticket.
