I accused Atiku of coup plotting, based on media reports – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, says he accused the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar of coup plotting, based on media reports he read.

Fani-Kayode, who left the opposition PDP to join the ruling party, had claimed that Atiku met with some military generals and might be planning a coup. Following, the military described Fani-Kayode’s claim as “malicious”, and after which the Department of State Security (DSS) called him in for questioning.

Speaking after his release from the DSS, Fani-Kayode said he made his conjecture based on some unverified media reports he received.

He said, “I issued a statement about three or four days ago expressing my concern about some reports in the media that suggested that Atiku Abubakar had some meetings with some generals in the Nigerian military.

“Based on that, I now asked questions about what he was doing and I suggest that it was possible, if true, that the most important thing is that there is a wider script, a hidden agenda.”

The former avaiation minister and critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, until his defection to the APC, equally spoke of his ordeal at the DSS office. He described the questioning session as “challenging”.

He said, “I won’t criticise anybody at this time for doing their job. It was extremely challenging for me at 62 to be confronted by a panel like that of very strong young men. It was not an easy thing but we went through it.”
