Okupe escapes jail, pays fine

Doyin Okupe, the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, has escaped jail following his conviction on Monday for money laundering.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, who ruled in the suit preferred against Okupe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),  said the politician contravened sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act by accepting cash in excess of what the law permits without using a bank.

The judge sentenced Okupe to two years but with an option of N500,000 for each of the charges with which he was convicted.

Okupe reportedly shelled out N13million to meet the conditions for his sentencing.

Okupe had pocketed over N200 million cash he collected from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).
