How I got into prostitution, says 19-years-old girl

A young woman has narrated how two human traffickers forced her into prostitution in Burkina Faso. The victim, identified only as Onyinyechi, said she was working as a maid in the Ajah area of Lagos state, when she met a former police officer, Ariwayo Oloyede.

Oloyede reportedly told the victim about job opportunities in the African country. He demanded N200, 000 as travel expenses, but the victim said she pleaded with him to collect N150, 000. Oloyede agreed to the reduced fee, but on the condition that he would have sex with Onyinyechi, which he did. Oloyede introduced the victim to his accomplice Christian Owanebi, after which both men made her swear to a blood oath. The men threatened Onyinyechi that the god of iron would kill her, if she revealed their plans to anyone.

Getting to Burkina Faso, Oloyede handed the victim over to a Nigerian based in the country, Christian Owanebi.

Owanebi, in turn, handed her over to a certain Madam Eunice – a commercial sex worker in the African country.

With her mobile phone seized, Onyinyechi said she could not contact her mother back home. She started working as a commercial sex worker, under the guardianship of Madam Eunice.

Onyinyechi said she usually slept with an average of 10 to 12 men, operating from 6pm till midnight. She made 85,000 CFA daily.

“After one week, Owanebi, who lives with his wife in Burkina Faso, told me he was travelling back to Nigeria. He gave me his phone because my phone was seized from me pending the time I would pay the outstanding debt for my travel expenses.

“I asked Owanebi to visit my mother, who lives in Lagos, to give him some money. Owanebi then promised to call me so that I could speak with my mother,” Onyinyechi said in her testimony before a federal high court.

The victim also said she summoned the courage to inform her mother of her plight during their telephone conversation, leading to Owanebi’s arrest by the police.

The trial judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, sentenced Oloyede to a year imprisonment and his accomplice, Owanebi to seven years imprisonment for their actions.
