How 317 Jangebe Schoolgirls Were Kidnapped – Witness

A source at the Government Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara State, where bandits kidnapped 317 schoolgirls said they initially mistook the abductors for security operatives. The anonymous staff member, according to PUNCH, said the bandits marched their captives into Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.

“When they came into the school, we thought they were security personnel but to our utmost dismay, they started putting the girls into Hilux vehicles and motorcycles then drove out of the school,” the staff said, adding that the operation lasted several hours with no security agents on hand to challenge the bandits.

Bello Matawalle, Governor of Zamfara State has announced boarding schools would be temporarily closed. He said the decision was to “douse the fear being entertained by parents and guardians.”

The mass kidnapping of students is the second in weeks, following that of the Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State. In Kagara, bandits forcefully took 27 students and 15 others captive including three teachers.

Also, gunmen had on December 11, 2020, seized about 300 schoolboys at a government boarding school in Kankara, Kastina State.

TheCornet reports that the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu has deployed special operatives and police choppers to comb the forests for the captives.
