NLNG denies ‘force majeure’ as cooking gas price soars

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited has denied the report that it declared a force majeure due to the intense flooding in the Niger Delta.

“We are still in operation!”, said NLNG and added it is “working with all critical stakeholders on mitigating the impact on product deliveries.”

“NLNG continues to supply LPG to the domestic market for now from the limited production.

“We continue to monitor the situation with Upstream Gas Suppliers and are evaluating the impact of the flood on its business,” the company said.

In spite of the company’s denial, Elkanah Chawai, a communications officer, is reported as saying that ‘the force majeure was due to the inability of suppliers to access routes around the flooded axis in the Niger Delta’.

At the same time, there is soaring cooking gas prices across the country.

In its own report, Daily Trust cited the case of Mrs. Onyeka Odoh who reportedly bought a 12.5 kilogram cooking gas at N10,500 –N700 higher than it sold earlier in the same week.

Another Abuja resident, Joseph Okoh, reportedly bought the same cooking gas N500 above the price it sold the same week.

Following the rising prices of cooking gas, the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), at the weekend warned against panic buying.

Oladapo Olatunbosun, the president of NALPGAM, said, “based on information reaching the association; NLNG has not shut down its production facility in Bonny as rumoured.”

He said the dedicated vessel for shipment of LPG from the NLNG Plant in Bonny, “Alfred Temile,” arrived in Lagos on Oct. 20 to discharge the product.

“We should not give opportunity for further price hike due to speculated shortage of the product.

“We are already in hard times with the Russian/Ukraine war causing upset in the markets and the scarcity.”
