Ghanaians ask President Akufo-Addo to step down
Ghanaian protesters have asked President Nana Akufo-Addo to step down. The protest, held on Saturday, came amid an economic crisis that has hammered the cedi currency and seen fuel and food costs spiral to record levels.
The protesters chanted “Akufo-Addo must go” and “IMF no”. Ghana plans to take billions of dollars in loan from the International Monetary Fund to support the economy. But this has also sparked opposition from those who say President Akufo-Addo benefits from every loan taken.
A Reuters report quotes Rafael Williams, a protester, as saying President Akufo-Addo “has failed and we are asking him to resign. High fuel price increments are killing the people of Ghana”.
There has been demonstrations over the economic situation in the country as a
quarter of the population live on less than $2.15 per day, according to the World Bank.
