Fubara gifts labour marches N100m for turning up for May Day

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, on May Day, gifted labour marches N100million. According to Nelson Chukwudi, his chief press secretary, Governor Fubara announced the donation “to assuage the sacrifices of the workers who turned up at the stadium for the celebration of the 2024 May Day.”
The statement equally reported governor’s promise to increase workers’ salaries. He also promised to continue his free bus ride initiative and to provide of palliatives due to economic hardship.
“We are also committed to implementing the increase in workers’ salaries recently approved by the Federal Government as soon as the parameters are made available,” the governor said.
Governor Fubara noted the role of workers in nationbuilding. “We may have reasonable causes to disagree, which is normal in every social relationship. But we cannot afford to be at each other’s throats and neglect our common responsibilities to advance the peace, security, and progress of our State,” he said.
The governor listed pro-labour actions taken since his inauguration to include release of N250million for renovation of state secretariat complex, recruitment of 1,000 doctors and other medical personnel, commencement of the Contributory Healthcare Insurance Scheme. He also said that he had begun paying the backlog of gratuities to retired civil servants and appointed 16 permanent secretaries.
In his address at the rally, held in Port Harcourt, state’s chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Alex Agwanwor, pro-labour actions of Governor Fubara have spurred support of workers for the government.
“We acknowledge consistently, the demonstration of Your Excellency’s confession of purpose and value driven leadership and administration in thoughts, deeds, and actions,” the NLC chairman said.
