Four ‘dead’ in Kano, five injured in Lagos political violence

Four persons are feared dead from the clash between supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano state. The NNPP supporters had gathered on the Zaria Expressway to welcome their presidential flag-bearer Rabiu Kwankwaso when the violence took place.

Abdullahi Kiyawa, who speaks for the Kano police command, said that the law enforcement arrested 85 persons involved in the violence. He equally said that the police recovered dangerous weapons from the arrested suspects. But, Kiyawa failed to confirm the alleged fatalities.

He explained that the police received report on “the likelihood of clashes and attacks on innocent citizens”, forcing the commissioner of police Muhammad Yakubu to “immediately summon the representatives of the three political parties to an emergency meeting”, in order “to find a solution to the impasse.”

He added, “Unfortunately, there was no headway with their planned rallies/processions. The Commissioner of Police passionately appealed to the consciousness of the representatives that this is not in the best interest of the fragile security of the state. Given this, the three political parties were advised to postpone the planned rallies/procession.

In Lagos, the police confirmed unknown persons stole three mobile phones and damaged a laptop belonging to supporters of the African Democratic Party (ADP), following an attack, in the Lekki area of the state. Unspecified number of persons was injured in the attack. The police did not ascertain whether it was a politically-induced attack.

Nigerians are heading to the poll on Saturday, February 25, for the presidential and national assembly elections.
