FG slammed with lawsuit over national carrier

The federal government has been slammed with a lawsuit, aimed at stopping its plan to set up a national carrier in partnership with Ethiopian airline.

Eight Nigerian domestic airlines instituted the suit on Friday. The respondents are Nigerian Air; Ethiopian Airlines; Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika; and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The plaintiffs’ reliefs include order of court stopping the deal and compelling the government to withdraw the Air Transport Licence issued by the Federal Government/Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to the planned national carrier – Nigeria Air.

In addition, the plaintiffs claim the minister of aviation has links with the ‘Transaction Adviser’, a company they said was incorporated last March.

The plaintiffs, in furtherance to their claims, seeks the court to determine compliance with due process in the sale of shares of Nigeria Air to Ethiopian airline.

They also want the court to declare the transaction null and void, based on the extent of its inconsistency or non-compliance with the law.

The court has asked aviation minister Sirika and other defendants to honour the summons and enter into appearance within 30 days.
