FG reverses own order on universities re-opening

The Federal Government has reversed its directive asking vice chancellors of universities to reopen them for academic resumption.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), which supervises the universities had issued the order.

The NUC would later reprobate by withdrawing the initial circular.

In the new circular, signed by Sam Onazi, director of finance and account of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the regulator said, “Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities are to please note.”

Onazi advised the vice chancellors to await further information.

The federal government had got the National Industrial Court of Nigeria to annul the seven months old lecturers strike.

The trial judge, Polycarp Hamman said the strike had done incalculable damage to careers of students and, therefore, asked the lecturers to go back to classroom.

But the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is yet to call the strike off and has also appealed the judgement.
