EDO: Shaibu says action he would take, if impeached

Phillip Shaibu, deputy governor of Edo State, has said that he would take a court action if the state’s house of assembly makes a plan to remove him from office.

Shaibu had declared himself the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at a primary election he conducted in his private residence in Benin City, the state capital.

Following his emergence at the parallel primaries, Shaibu said he had received impeachment threats.

“They are threatening to impeach me,” he said.

He added that he had only exercised his constitutional right to vie for political office.

“So if constitutional right is why they will now trigger impeachment, the courts are there; they will interpret it,” he said.

Shaibu is at loggerheads with Governor Godwin Obaseki, who he said is opposed to his political ambition.

Obaseki’s handpicked candidate, Asue Ighadalo had emerged the PDP flag bearer at a primary election held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

But Shaibu dismissed the political greenhorn, Ighadalo, saying that he is not capable of winning the governorship race.

He said, “If the party wants to win the election, they will not go for Ighodalo. If the party wants to win the election, the people have spoken, and they have spoken very loud and clear.

“If people can stand bullets to say this is who we want, then the party should follow that direction.”
