FG certifies new varsity lecturers’ union rivaling ASUU

The Federal Government has presented certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics, a rival union to the embattled Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Oshundun Olajide, the deputy firector of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The invitation read, “The Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige cordially invites you to the recognition and presentation of Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics”

It added: “Your media organisation is invited to cover the event and strictly by invitation.”

TheCornet reports that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over government refusal to honour a 2009 agreement. The aggrieved lecturers are demanding, among other things, university revitalisation fund.

The FG recently instituted a suit at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria against the union. The trial judge, Polycarp Hamman, ruled that the ASUU resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit. Dissatisfied with the ruling, ASUU protested to the appeals court.
