Ex-governor Yari forfeits properties, bank deposits to FG

Abdulaziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara State, will forfeit 10 properties and bank deposits to the federal government.

This follows the ruling of a federal judge in Abuja on Wednesday.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted the application for interim forfeiture brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, against Yari.

The judge also ordered the ICPC to publicise the order for any person or persons with interest in the affected properties to show cause within 14 days why they should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Some of the properties, according to the ICPC, are in Maryland (USA), Abuja, Kaduna, among others.

TheCornet reports that the EFCC, in April 2021, detained Yari over alleged illegal financial dealings and misappropriation of funds. The anti-graft agency subsequently applied to a federal court for the final forfeiture of Yari’s deposits in Zenith and Polaris banks.

Yari has faced a number of issues in recent years, including losing the control of the party structure in Zamfara State.

His long-drawn political battles with Senator Kabiru Marafa over who controlled the party in the state led multiple court battles, resulting in the sacking of the state executives, an elected governor, and members of the state assembly.

Amidst the crisis, a court pronounced that the APC elected officials be replaced with the PDP members who contested the same positions, leading to emergence of incumbent Governor Bello Matawalle.
