Fresh crisis hits Labour Party, Abure under fire

A fresh crisis appears to be brewing in the Labour Party (LP) as some of its senior members have demanded the removal of Julius Abure as its national chairman. Those calling for reforms in the party are Diokpa Delly Ajufo, Zariyi Yusuf, Hon. Keftin Amuga, Dr. Peter Piper, Igwe K.C, Tony Magnifiquedude Asekome, Alhaji Audie Mohammed, and Prof Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr.

The accused Abure of mismanaging the political gains the party recorded in recent elections among other allegations.

But, in his reaction, Ifoh Obiorah, national publicity secretary of the party, defended Abure’s leadership of the party. He described the opposition against him as “their hasty attempt to vilify the Abure leadership and to also destroy the facts of humongous achievements.”

He said, “Being new joiners and not knowing the culture of the party (some of them just a few months old in the party) of course, that’s what you get when ignorance and overzealousness overwhelm your reasoning.

“Most of those who authored the statement did not even win their units let alone winning their Local Government and State,” the party said. Ifoh, at the same time, denied the Labour Party is “a transactional party.”

Ifoh said it was not true the that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) distanced themselves from the party.

He said that, instead, “over 50 members of the Organised Labour were members of the National Campaign Council at various levels.” He also denied money exchanged hands during the party’s governorship primaries for selecting a governorship candidate for Imo State.”
