Why Nigeria is backward – Obasanjo

Nigeria’s former leader Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigeria disappointed itself, the black race, and the entire globe for still being underdeveloped despite its enormous potentials

Obasanjo, who ruled Nigeria both as military head of state and an elected civilian president, spoke at a book launch, held in Abuja on Monday.

He said, “We’ve disappointed ourselves, we’ve disappointed Africa, we’ve disappointed the black race and we’ve disappointed the world.

“We’ve not always put the round peg in the round hole.

“We’re carried along by ego and emotion of self, selfishness and self-centeredness, ethnic and religious jingoism with total lack of understanding of the world we live in and gross misunderstanding of what development entails and how to move fast and continuously on the trajectory of development.”

Obansanjo equally blamed the country for not having leaders committed to its development .

“If you ask most of our leaders why they want to be in the position they’re craving for, you’ll weep for your nation over their level of emptiness as far as development issues are concerned,” he stated.

To the statesman, Nigeria cannot achieve “justice, equity and inclusive society”, if it lacks “peace and security.”

Equally at the launch of the book written by a former minister, Olusegun Aganga is another former president, Goodluck Jonathan.
