Eight charged over Edo train kidnapping

The police in Edo state, South-south Nigeria, have charged eight suspects for conspiring and kidnapping 20 intending train passengers and officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) recently.

TheCornet had reported how the gunmen invaded the train station at Igueben, whisking away their victims amid sporadic shooting.

All the victims have been rescued from the kidnappers.

Those charged are Ibadin Hamilton, Ighoko Odion, Okojie Ewa, Okie Patrick, Friday Ighedujiemu, Halilu Umaru, Aminu Ibrahim, and Isah Aliyu.

In the charge sheet, the suspects are accused of abducting the victims, in their expectation to get ransom worth N20million from their relatives.

The police said that the offence of conspiracy contravenes Section 5, and punishable under Section 2 (1) (2) of the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, of Edo State, 2013.

Equally, kidnapping of the victims is said to violate Section 2 (1), (2) of the same law.
