Defection: Ayade gets temporary reprieve

Cross River Governor Ben Ayade has got a temporary reprieve from the a federal court hearing the suit of defection against him.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday postponed the delivery of his ruling on the matter til April 16.

The Peoples Democratic Party sued Ayade and his deputy, Ivara Esu, and state assemblymen for defecting to the All Progressives Congress.

The party wants the governor and others removed from office for their action.

The judge had in his earlier ruling declared the seats of 20 members of the Cross River House of Assembly vacant.

Lately, Nigeria has seen a wave of court rulings pronouncing the removal governors and state lawmakers for defecting to parties other than that which sponsored them to their positions.

The Cornet had reported the ruling by Justice Iyang Ekwo removing Ebonyi Governor David Umahi, his deputy, and 16 state lawmakers for defecting to the APC.
