Stop right there! Court tells Nigerian police over tinted glass policy

A Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has directed the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and a plaintiff, John Aikpokpo-Martins to refrain from taking action on the tinted glass policy.

The police had cited security concerns as the reason for directing vehicles owners using tinted windows to either remove it or properly apply to use it. Aikpokpo-Martins believes the Nigeria Police action is overreach.

According to his filing, Aikpokpo-Martins says enforcing the policy would add burdens to motorists, infringe on constitutional rights to privacy and freedom of movement, and could lead to police officers harassing vehicle owners.

The plaintiff’s suit adds to the growing number of critics of the policy. Similar to Aikpokpo-Martins’ suit, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, had sued the police on the matter.
