Manhunt for two soldiers involved in alleged coup plotting

A report says military sources divulged that two suspected coup plotters have sneaked out of the country. As per TheCable report, the fleeing soldiers are JM Ganaks – a major with service no N/14363, who hails from the federal capital territory. The said Ganaks was of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 58. The other is G Binuga, a captain with service no N/167722.

Until he became a fugitive, Binuga was attached to the DHQ SOF Bida, Niger state, the report said. He was a member of the regular course 64. The report adds that the authorities, so far, have arrested over 30 officers over the involvement in the alleged coup.

Albeit, the Nigerian military has denied that any coup attempt took place, it has not contradicted the media reports on the alleged failed coup. Cornet News gathered from earlier reports that the coup plotters planned to assassinate President Bola Tinubu and several top government functionaries on Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The plot leaked, reportedly forcing President Tinubu to abandon the traditional military parade and ceremonies usually associated with the occasion.

The Presidency however denied the claim, saying that President Tinubu instead had other engagements to attend outside the federal capital, Abuja. In spite of the denial, President Tinubu has reshuffled military service chiefs. In addition to this, the military has also redeployed senior officers to new postings, all pointing to the rumours about the alleged coup.
