Businessperson Aisha Achimugu goes on hunger strike in EFCC custody
Businessperson, Aisha Achimugu, has faulted her arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday and decided to go on a hunger strike.
She was arrested after she landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja early Tuesday morning.
The EFCC is accusing Achimugu, who is the managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Felak Concept Group, of money laundering.
Chikaosolu Ojukwu, her lawyer, explained the circumstance of her arrest.
“She arrived voluntarily and was arrested by the EFCC. She has immediately gone on hunger strike,” he said.
“Like Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, she is a prisoner of conscience.
“This phase will surely pass. Nigeria’s rule of law is at the precipice.”
Cornet News report that Achimugu’s arrest comes a day after Justice Inyang Ekwo, of the federal high court in Abuja her to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday in connection with an alleged money laundering case.
Kehinde Ogunwumiju, counsel to Achimugu, told the court that his client had expressed a willingness to honour the EFCC invitation on April 29 once she returns to the country.
The counsel sought the court to sustain same bail conditions earlier given by the EFCC to Achimugu.
