Some armed men dressed in military khakis have killed innocent citizens after they invaded Ilesha Baruba, and Kemaanji communities respectively. Both communities are located in Baruten Local Government Area, and Kaiama Local Government Area, in Kwara State.
As per Daily Trust, the attackers belong to a newly formed terrorist organization, called Mahmuda. In one instance, the suspected terrorists, who rode on motorcycles, invaded a market square where they shot indiscriminately at innocent residents. A member of a vigilante group and a young man are reportedly among the casualties of the attack.
Prior to the attack, the terrorists had, last Friday, killed some members of a vigilante group. As per the report, an eyewitness revealed the grotesque killing of some casualties, saying the terrorists blew off their victims’ heads.
Other places the terrorists had unleashed attacks are Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu villages, all located in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
In his reaction to the incidents, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said: “What we are seeing today is the non-state actors targeting the vigilantes in a reprisal attack and this will come to pass. This is because we are working with the military who have visited the place, made contact and had robust engagement.”
Cornet News gathered that the terrorist group, Mahmuda, launched over five years ago, and its members migrated into Kwara communities from an area called Mokwa, in Niger State.
The terrorists allegedly chased away guard rangers at the Kainji Lake National Park, before setting up their camps therein.
The group is a splinter of the Boko Haram faction, led by Abubakar Shekau, whom the military claimed to have executed during a fierce offensive.
