COVID-19: Women urged to deny men sex if they refuse vaccination

Women have been advised to withhold sex from men, if they refuse to take COVID 19 vaccine. There has been vaccine hesitancy across continents, due in part to religious beliefs and indifference by many.

The ‘no vaccine, no sex’ advice became a necessary, as some men in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province continue to shun vaccination.

According to Daily Maverick, Nomakhosazana Meth, who is in charge of health policy in the Eastern Cape province, gave the advice.

“I think it is a good idea to say, ’no vaccine, no sex’, especially for unmarried women. It will protect both of you,” Meth was quoted as saying.

Her advice followed a report showing that fewer men than women were getting the jabs.

More than a million people have been vaccinated so far in the Eastern Cape, while the health authorities have an ambition of reaching two million people by the end of the year, and 4.5 million by April next year.

According to Our World in Data, only 14% of South African population has been fully vaccinated.

Similarly, in Nigeria vaccine hesitancy and refusal of many citizens to adhere to COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical cautions are major drawdown in the fight against the killer virus.

According to the National Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC), 204,752 Nigerians have caught the virus. The agency also puts the number of active cases at 9,111, while 2,690 persons have died of the virus. COVID-19 testing in Nigeria is quite negligible, compared to her huge population and possibility of hundreds of infected persons, some of whom are asymptomatic.

Government authorities have not helped matters, due to scare at a time. Then, some of those complaining of having fever were afraid to visit the hospitals. They had done so to avoid being taken for COVID patients. On top of this were complaints about wrongful claims and diagnosis.

Recent attempt at nationalizing COVID-19 vaccination has generated mixed reactions. A protest erupted in Edo State, South-South Nigeria, on Monday, against the government’s compulsory vaccination policy.
