Why Nigeria needs Kwankwaso, Obi’s alliance – Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former member of the house of representatives, says Nigeria needs the alliance between presidential candidates Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi as its “the much-needed alternative for a positive change”.

Jibrin tweeted his optimism about the possible alliance between Kwankwaso, who is the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Obi, the Labour Party flagbearer. Both politicians have continued to hold merger talks aimed at running a single ticket that either emerging the presidential candidate and the other, his running mate.

“There are challenges but I am optimistic that the NNPP/ LP, Kwankwaso/Obi alliance will happen to give Nigeria the much needed alternative for a positive change” Kwankwaso on, “ said Jibrin.

Kwankwaso continues to enjoy a cult following in Kano state, where he had been a two-time governor, and some parts of the north.

He was a presidential candidate of the APC in 2015, but he later left the party to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequently to form his own party, the NNPP. Kwankwaso also vied for the presidential ticket of the PDP in 2019, but he lost to Atiku Abubakar who four years later would also become the PDP’s flag bearer again.

On his part, Obi – a two-term former governor of Anambra state – has emerged the popular choice of some youths, especially those from the south-east region of Nigeria. The youthful, social media-loving supporters of Obi have displayed unflinching loyalty to his candidacy.

The thinking of the two camps is that the proposed pact would gain wider acceptability among Nigerians such that they would be able to win the presidential vote in the 2023 election.
