Akpabio, Abbas told to stop Tinubu’s attempt to control social media

President of Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and his House of Representatives’ counterpart, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, have received directive to stop President Bola Tinubu from regulating social media platforms.

Kolawole Oluwadare, deputy director of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), urged them to ensure President Tinubu “drop any ongoing efforts to put pressure on Google, YouTube, TikTok and other social media companies.” Oluwadare said allowing social media regulation would “unduly restrict these fundamental human rights.” The civil society cited a comment by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) describing the social media as “a monster.”

Oluwadare disagrees, adding a social media restriction would “cause incalculable damage, both in material and human rights terms.”

“Rather than rushing to pass the social media regulation bill, the National Assembly should encourage the Federal Government to maximize opportunities around social media access, and address the growing social and economic inequalities in the country,” SERAP stated.
