Couple arrested for kidnapping, murder of Ogun hotelier

A couple, Adebayo Adewumi and his wife, Okereke Oluwafunmilayo, and their accomplice, one Adebowale Sanni, have been arrested for kidnapping and killing a famous hotelier in Ogun State.

The accused are said to have killed the hotelier, Otunba Abayomi Ajayi Smith, who owned Rolak Hotels, in September 2020, after they collected N15 million in ransom from the victim’s family.

Unrelenting, the kidnappers again planned to kidnap the late Smith’s wife and son, with the aim of collecting millions in ransom payment. They had also planned to murder them, in order to obliterate any trace that link them to the plot.

This is according to a statement by the Ogun State Police Command. Abímbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson for the command, said operatives stayed on the case since late Smith’s murder. Learning of the kidnappers fresh plot, the operatives successfully nabbed Adebowale Sanni. The arrest led to Larry Adewunmi and his wife’s arrest in Ilesha, Osun state.

The police said their investigation revealed that Larry’s wife, Okereke, was a staffer of the late hotelier, Smith. The police said it also discovered that Larry was formerly a fraudster, who later took to kidnapping rich people for ransom.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Larry got full information about Otunba Ajayi Smith through his wife Olufunmilayo who was an employee of the man,” the police said.

The police said they found in Larry’s Jaiz bank account the sum of Thirty-four million, nine hundred and fifty three thousand four hundred and fifty five (N34,953,455), and another deposit of Four million Five hundred and seventy six thousand eight hundred and forty six naira (N4,576,846) in his Access bank account.
