Chris Ngige foregoes presidential ambition to remain minister Â

Chris Ngige, Nigeria’s minister of Labour and Productivity, has quit presidential race. Ngige announced this in a statement he issued on Friday.

The minister had said he would consult President Muhammadu Buhari and his constituents on the quit order given to government appointees who are interested in seeking elective offices in 2023.

The minister and others like him had put up strident opposition to Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The provision of the electoral law mandates political appointees to resign their office if they are to participate in party primaries and congress, with the intent of seeking nomination for elective political office.

In his statement of withdrawal, Ngige said he took the decision “in the overall interest of the nation” and “to enable me concentrate on my job, and assist the President and the Government”.

The minister also said he consulted his family, constituents, and supporters in reaching his decision to quit the presidential race.
