Buhari sued over electricity tariff hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued President Muhammadu Buhari and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over the recent electricity tarrif hike.

In a statement, the not-for-profit said that President Buhari failed to reverse the hike and to also probe the bailouts given to electricity distribution companies (DisCo) and Generation Companies (GenCo) since 2005.

Aside the president and Malami, SERAP also joined the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC as respondents to the suit.

On its demands, SERAP is seeking the court to compel Buhari to ‘promptly investigate the bailouts.’

The NGO equally says that “millions of Nigerians continue to pay the price for corruption in the electricity sector–staying in darkness,” whereas “regular and uninterrupted” supply of it is both an “essential public service”and “a fundamental human right.”

SERAP adds that the hike is unjustified, due to ‘the unreliable, inefficient and poor quality of electricity in the country.’
