Buhari sued for N100bn for cancelling appointee

President Muhammadu Buhari has been sued for cancelling the appointment he had initially offered Ifeanyi Ararume to be the non-executive chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC Ltd.).

Ararume, a former senator, is seeking a damage of N100billion in the suit filed against the president before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Ararume, in the suit, describes his removal as unlawful and unconstitutional.

Araraume asks the court to determine whether the president can lawfully remove him as non-executive chairman of the NNPC, given the provision of Section 63 (3) of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and section 288 of the CAMA Act 2020. He also wants the court to determine whether his purported removal letter of January 17, 2022 is not wrongful, illegal, null and void.

Ararume said he attended the 23rd World Petroleum Congress in the United States of America, based on his appointment. He said he was later told the President withdrew his appointment, without any reason given.

The trial judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, fixed December 15 for further mention of the suit. He also said that the amended originating summons be served on parties before the adjourned date.
