Buhari returns from UAE trip

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to the country from his trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Buhari returned on Saturday evening after spending two days in the Arab country on a commiserative visit and to felicitate with its new leader.

The President, who departed around 1:30pm on Thursday, landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja by 4pm with members of his entourage.

While in Abu Dhabi, Buhari met the new President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to whom he conveyed his and Nigeria’s condolences on the passing of the former President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Buhari also joined the Jummah prayers for the repose of the soul of the late President of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria political class are demanding that the president assent to an amendment in the Electoral Act 2022 to enable statutory delegates vote at party conventions.

For the opposition PDP, the president has only Saturday to assent to the amended, without which its statutory delegates cannot vote at its May 28 national convention.

Although the PDP in its statement on Saturday seemed to have accepted the reality and has stated that only elected delegates are eligible to vote at its convention.

For the ruling APC, the president assent before Sunday is all that is needed for its delegates to vote at its convention, fixed for May 29.

According to INEC guidelines, parties are required to submit list of their delegates to the electoral umpire seven days before holding their primaries.
