BRT driver involved in train death faces manslaughter charge

Lagos state government has slammed a 16-count charge on BRT driver-Oluwaseun Osibanjo-involved in the collision with a train on March 9. Six persons died from the accident and 96 others sustained injuries. Earlier in the week, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that 77 of them were discharged from various hospitals, leaving 19 others on admission.

Grace Alo, director of public affairs, Lagos ministry of justice, said that Osinbajo would be facing charges of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm to the victims.

“Accordingly, he is to be charged with 6 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous bodily harm. Both offences are contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” Alo said in the statement.

TheCornet reported that Osinbajo had tried impatiently to beat an oncoming train at a level crossing at Sogunle, in Ikeja. But his gambit led to a fatal accident. The driver would later claim that the staff bus belonging to the Lagos state government had a mechanical fault.
