Bobrisky sentenced to six months jail without option of fine

A federal court in Lagos, Nigeria, has sentenced a controversial crossdresser, Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, popularly called Bobrisky, to six months’ imprisonment for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

Okuneye’s journey to goal began with his arrest after he was seen in a video spraying the naira at cinema where a Yoruba flick, Ajakaju was premiering. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which prosecuted Okuneye had equally accused him of money laudering before dropping the charge.

Delivering his sentence, Justice Abimbola Awogboro said that Okeneye’s sentencing would deter others from abusing the currency.

Although the offence carries an option of a fine, Awogboro did not spare the celebrity the jail.  During his previous proceeding, Okuneye pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him and had ask for forgiveness. He also promised to his large social media following to campaign against the act. His pleas, however, did not cut an ice with the judge.
